Post Workflow question for a beginner

Hi, I just found MWS and I'm hoping to use it in an architectural video mapping display for Halloween this October. I hope you've not given up on it although I see that you may have "moved on". Hopefully someone can answer my questions.

So I'm not clear on the steps to create a projection but here's what I think happens. Please correct me if I'm wrong:

  • Make a mesh of your house (or building)
  • Add amazing animations and textures to that mesh in Blender (or other 3D tool)
  • Render that animation out as a MOV or other video type from a camera approximately at the same view as your projector in the real world
  • Import the same mesh into MWS
  • Apply the rendered video to the mesh in MWS and deform it to fit the mesh
  • Project your video onto your real-world building and tweak the mesh so it aligns perfectly with your real-world projection

Is that right?

Hi

not quite.

first take a closer look at the tutorials and the demo projects.

Make a mesh of your house (so far so good)

But now:

use that mesh to create the animations you wanna project. usually I work with two meshes: a detailed mesh for the animation (plus all the other elements that compose the animation) and a low resolution mesh for mapping.

BUT: Render that animation out as a MOV or other video type from a camera approximately at the same view as your SPECTATORS are in front of the building

it is important to understand: MWS was created to decouple the position of the render camera (i.e. where the spectator looks from) and the projector.

the single most important step in the whole process: you have to do a UV-mapping of the above low res mesh. Tutorial no 3 should explains how you should proceed. this step makes sure that the rendered video fits perfectly onto the low res mesh.

Inside MWS you deform this low res mesh in order to fit the rendered video onto the building.

hope this helps to get you started.

cheers

martin

This is very helpful, thanks!

I will get to work on my meshes and may post again later with questions.

Thanks again!
